Artist Statement
I have worked to develop innovative images of elements and shapes. I have arranged
these shapes and elements to consciously add to my visual library. I have embraced
classical forms and techniques while trying to reach beyond the traditionally obvious
solutions to design problems.
By taking a classical design, whether it is an image or form, and adding my personal
elements, I make it my own. My objective is to simplify the object, stripping it down to
its purest form to determine its relevant parts. Satisfaction for me is finding a design
element that appears outwardly complicated, but can be simplified to where the careful
and disciplined steps of fine craftsmanship materialize. The pleasant surprise of a subtle
design feature makes a piece so much more endearing.
Knowing my roots helps me to clearly see the different possibilities of where to go
with a design. The pattern on the cabinet doors is taken from shimmering light on
feathers. I continue to exploit the controlled use of the grain patterns and colors of
the woods, which I am able to obtain, and strive to maintain a design identity in
all my pieces.
